Brief History of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

2008 - Our last service at 1516 Moorings Drive was on Sunday, April 6. The first service at the new building was on April 13.  The dedication service of the new building was held June 1.

2007 - Pastor Flammann accepts our call and is installed as the new senior Pastor on November 11.

2007 - A dinner party retirement celebration was held on March 25 for Pastor Frohm after 30 years of service at Good Shepherd. Pastor Kuhn also retired in March as Pastoral Assistant after 14 years of service. Interim Pastor Ben Nass arrived to lead the congregation while the call committee continued the call process for a new senior pastor.

2006 - Construction actually began in March and the weekly videos started to document the entire process.

2005 - In April we received our building site approval.  At a groundbreaking ceremony on April 10, members and guests gathered to celebrate the construction phase of our new building.

2003 - In January we completed the purchase of a site near the intersection of Route 7 and Old Reston Avenue, where we hoped to begin construction of new facilities in the spring of 2005.  In February 2003, we added a Lay Minister Tim Christenson.   The church hosted a dinner at the Reston Hyatt on June 8, where members had an opportunity to present a financial pledge to the "Sow Bountifully - Reap Bountifully" building program.  Special worship services were held on June 21 and 22 to dedicate our pledges.

2002 - "Pastor Pete" accepts call to minister to a new congregation in the Pacific northwest.

1999  - Four Impact Teams were created to brainstorm options of how our congregation might develop under four different scenarios.

1998 - We called an assistant pastor, the Rev. Peter Luedemann, to expand the congregation's ministry to youth and young adults and to develop "The River," a Saturday evening service designed specifically for people who have not been raised in the faith.

1996 - November Night of Dreams. The congregation was asked to dream big and create the vision of what our church could be.

1996 - Our Savior's Way Lutheran Church, a daughter congregation, was started in Ashburn, Virginia, 10 miles west of Reston.  In order to continue its ministry of outreach and expand the Sunday School, the congregation once again rented education space at a neighboring elementary school.

1993 - The Rev. Dr. Gerald Kuhn joined our staff as part-time Pastoral Assistant.

1986 - The church built an expansion to the sanctuary and added a two-story education wing.

1981 - The fully accredited preschool was established; enrollment soon increased to over 100 students.

1977 - Good Shepherd called the Rev. Monte Frohm as pastor and built its sanctuary and office area. The congregation experienced rapid growth and soon added a second worship service and rented Sunday School space at a nearby elementary school.

1971 - The congregation was formally organized and called its first pastor, the Rev. Jerry Riemer, who served until 1976.

1969 - Our church began as an outgrowth of St. Paul 's Lutheran Church in Falls Church, Virginia. The first worship service was held in the Washington Plaza Baptist Church, in the Lake Anne section of Reston.

Throughout its history, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has been actively involved in reaching out to make new disciples and to meet basic human needs in the greater Reston-Herndon area of Northern Virginia.
